Our Itinerary

Hello! While preparing this blog, I thought I’d post our itinerary outline as the first blog post to give a general overview of what we’ll be doing.

30th Dec 2016 → Arrive in San José, Costa Rica at 9:15 pm.

31st Dec 2016 → Orientation day. Explore San José, change money, make arrangements for travelling, get in touch with trekking agents, book accommodation, liaise with project hosts for later stages of the expedition, familiarise with the culture and history of Costa Rica.

1st Jan 2017 → Travel from San José to San Gerardo. Head south from the capital to San Gerardo and its cloud forest reserve.

2nd Jan – 3rd Jan 2017 → San Gerardo Trek. This cloud forested area lies in the Talamanca Range and is home to Costa Rica’s highest peak, Cerro Chirripó, which lies at 3,820m.

4th Jan 2017 → Travel from San Gerardo to San José. Head north from San Gerardo to the capital.

5th Jan 2017 → Rest and Relaxation – white water rafting!

6th Jan 2017 → Travel from San José to Liberia. Head north along the Panamerican Highway.

7th Jan – 12th Jan 2017 → Santa Rosa National Park trek. This trek will walk us through the largest remaining tract of tropical dry forest in Costa Rica. It has 10 unique habitats spanning the park, 365 species of bird and mammal and Costa Rica’s most famous monument.

13th Jan 2017 → International travel day – an all day journey including an international border crossing to Nicaragua.

14th Jan 2017 → Cultural day in Granada. Explore the city of Granada on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, visit churches and markets, absorb the Latino atmosphere, buy some souvenirs, venture outside the city to another area and possibly take part in some zip wiring or stand up paddleboarding!

15th 2017 – 19th Jan 2017 → Project phase. Our project will take place in the community of Nueva Esperanza, which lies 3km south-west of Granada. We will be working with La Esperanza Granada, which is a volunteer organisation with a focus on improving the future for children through education. We will mostly be doing manual work in the mornings, such as fixing the laneways that lead to the school. This may be followed by some teaching, games and recreation with the primary school children in the afternoons.

20th Jan – 22nd Jan 2017 → Depart Managua and arrive in Sydney on the 22nd at 8:35 am.
